  PERSONAL STATEMENT

Matthew Hannibal, MD
is a Board Certified, Fellowship Trained Orthopedic Spine surgeon and Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He specializes in diagnosing surgically treatable disorders of the neck and back, and using minimally invasive surgical solutions and new spinal technologies to treat them when appropriate. These techniques can now be applied to many potentially surgical diagnoses such as, herniated discs, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and vertebral fractures. He believes in exhausting non-operative treatments prior to surgical consideration when appropriate, and in individualizing care based on diagnosis and available treatment options for each patient's situation.

Following medical school at Georgetown University, and six years of Orthopedic Surgery training in New York City, Dr. Hannibal was awarded and completed a Fellowship in Spinal Surgery at Stanford University. He then practiced for five years at the St. Mary's Spine Center in San Francisco specializing in the surgical correction of complex spine problems. In addition, he served as Director of Spine Research and Development, and as the Associate Director of the San Francisco Orthopedic Residency Program, training residents and fellows. Dr. Hannibal has authored over 15 book chapters and journal articles, has over 50 national and international presentations, has been a clinical investigator in 7 new spinal technologies, and has trained surgeons nationwide on procedures such as the artificial disc replacement and the X-Stop device.

Dr. Hannibal joined Carolina Orthopedic Specialists in 2008. He practices in Lenoir and performs surgeries at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. He resides in Lenoir with his wife Janine and his two young sons Aidan and Asher. He enjoys the small town charm and sense of community that the high country of North Carolina offers and serving his community.
