  PERSONAL STATEMENT

Alfred E. Geissele, MD, FACS
is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in spinal disorders in both children and adults.  His areas of interest include minimally invasive spine surgery, ruptured discs, back and neck pain, fractures in the aging spine, spondylolisthesis, and scoliosis in both children and adults.

Before sub-specializing in spinal disorders, he served as an orthopaedic surgeon and Chief of Orthopaedics for the 101st Airborne Division and 5th Special Forces Group at Fort Campbell, Ky.  Following his responsibilities there, he developed expertise in spinal disorders through training at the University of Minnesota and the Twin Cities Scoliosis Spine Center in Minneapolis where he completed the prestigious John H. Moe Fellowship.  Subsequently, he served as a staff surgeon, and trained new orthopaedic surgeons at Fort Gordon, Georgia (Augusta) before coming to Hickory in 1995.

Upon his arrival in Hickory, Dr. Geissele developed a volunteer scoliosis screening program, in conjunction with Frye Regional Medical Center, which continues to serve the greater Hickory area and Catawba county schools.  He has participated in local volunteer efforts with the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, and American Cancer Society and continues to show his commitment to the community through service in the Cooperative Christian Ministries Clinic and in the Pet Partners program at Frye Regional Medical Center.

A physician for over 23 years, Dr. Geissele has practiced both clinical and academic medicine. He is the author or co-author of 8 scholarly papers, and has given numerous presentations at both national and international meetings, as well as regionally in Hickory, Morganton, Asheville, and at Lenoir Rhyne College.

He enjoys the outdoors, 4-wheeling, hunting, reading, photography, music, and gardening.  He and his wife, Marie, are members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; their 3 children live in Hickory.
