TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS
A trigger point injection is a procedure that is designed to minimize or alleviate back pain caused by trigger points. Trigger points are small knots that can form in the fascia tissue or muscles and cause referred pain or pain that is felt in another part of the body.
Trigger point injections are used to relieve myofascial pain syndrome which is chronic pain that involves tissue that surrounds the muscle. They are typically performed when myofascial pain syndrome does not respond to more conservative treatments. Muscle groups in the arms, neck, and lower back can all be treated by this procedure.
WHAT CONDITIONS DO TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS TREAT?
Trigger points can be caused by a number of conditions. Patients may develop painful trigger points because of muscle tissue injuries such as post viral syndrome or whiplash. Underlying structural conditions such as ruptured discs, osteoarthritis, scoliosis, and postural issues may also lead to trigger points and be treated by trigger point injections.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A TRIGGER POINT INJECTION?
Trigger point injections are generally quick, outpatient procedures. During a trigger point injection, you will be asked to sit or lay down depending on where your injection sites are located. Next, the area of the injection site will be thoroughly cleansed with an antiseptic. Your doctor will then place the needle into the muscle site and inject a local anesthetic or saline. Lastly, the injection site will be sealed with a Band-Aid. The whole procedure will be completed in a only a few minutes.
HOW WILL I RECOVER FROM A TRIGGER POINT INJECTION?
Following the trigger point injection, you may experience bruising, tenderness, and soreness until you’ve had a chance to recover. An increase in pain may occur as well.
Physical therapy and stretching exercises may all be recommended to help you ease the discomfort and reap the maximum benefit from the injection. These suggestions are all essential as the major benefit of trigger point injections is to allow you to participate in a rehabilitative program more effectively. Since trigger point injections loosen muscle groups, they will make it easier for you to make progress in joint mobilization and physical therapy routines.
